Nov. 4 (UPI) — Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi erupted late Sunday, killing at least six people and affecting more than a dozen villages, the country’s disaster management agency said Monday.

The eruption occurred minutes before midnight on Sunday and lasted about 24 minutes, the agency said in a statement. The nearly 5,600-foot-tall volcano is located in the southeastern province of Nusa Tenggara in Indonesia.

Hot ash, rocks and laval were thrown out over a radius of nearly 6 kilometers, Indonesia’s state news agency Antara reported.

At least 14 villages in three districts were affected, with the National Disaster Management Authority saying more than 10,000 people were affected.

In response, several refugee camps were established.

The agency has raised the volcano’s alert status to the highest Level IV and established a quarantine zone with a radius of about 7.9 kilometers around Mount Lewotobi.

She warns residents to remain calm and follow government instructions. People near the mountain are instructed to wear masks to prevent volcanic ash from entering their respiratory tract.

According to Antara, a total of 168 emergency personnel were deployed to help with evacuations.
