Republicans’ refusal to acknowledge reality is killing people

I often post stories about my campaign adventures.

Now, on the morning of the election, I want to demonstrate (using my thesis) how destructive the Republican-led United States would be to our future. Feel free to share this with any friends who need a reminder of how the Democratic election DIRECTLY impacts the future of our planet.

Maps often tell stories with astonishing clarity, whether they’re about the divide between Republicans and Democrats or about smart or ignorant farm laws that affect millions of lives. Sometimes the cards are the same and so are the stories they tell. This is one such map and story.

We Democrats know this There are only a few precious years left So that we can get CO2 emissions under control before we reach critical tipping points. Once we cross these delicate thresholds, there is little we can do to prevent billions of premature deaths and perhaps even human extinction. We can’t let this happen without a fight. While there are many things at stake in this election, nothing is more important than how this election impacts U.S. and global climate policy.

Because I am involved in this existential struggle, I chose natural resource economics and climate change as my majors at the University of Florida. I completed my master’s degree in August and then immediately focused my time and energy on the election campaign Democratic candidate in Florida District 12.

In my dissertation, I objectively examined efforts to pass legislation in all 50 states that would help farmers become part of climate solutions. I examined whether states have passed laws to support farmers who use regenerative agriculture practices to help sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in our soils, reversing the centuries-long flow of carbon from the soil to the atmosphere. These carbon-sequestering agricultural practices are often referred to as carbon farming. Regenerative agriculture not only helps address the climate crisis, but also provides healthier food with less reliance on chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. This means carbon farming can also help save our remaining wildlife and improve deteriorating water quality in our streams, lakes, rivers and estuaries.

This is what my research revealed Only 23 states had such laws which dealt with carbon farming. Of these, only six states had meaningful legislation that met five rudimentary criteria I established to identify legislation that reflects the wise use of public resources rather than simply creating a government gift program that fails to provide a meaningful climate return to the American people brings.

After completing my dissertation and moving on to a political campaign, I took a look at the national electoral map and compared it to my dissertation research map. What I saw was both amazing and disappointing. Although carbon farming is an approach that would disproportionately benefit a Republican-majority electorate – farmers and rural communities – all but two states that do not have carbon farming legislation have been either Republican-leaning or conservative-leaning states. Likewise, all but three states with carbon farming laws were either “blue states” or “swing states.” This means that in 90% of all states, carbon agriculture legislation is directly aligned with a state’s current national policy.

This shows how our presidential, congressional and state elections directly impact our country’s ability to pursue even the most conservative approaches to addressing the climate crisis.

By supporting my campaign and those of other climate candidates, you can help on both fronts – the policy solutions and the technical/scientific solutions. I and other similarly determined candidates will never stop advocating for climate solutions, whether on the agenda, in our research or in bipartisan advocacy. We deliver a clear and absolute return on your investment. You and I have no choice but to pursue all available solutions with the greatest possible intensity. Help me be part of a growing army of climate warriors fighting to protect you, your children’s children, and everyone (red, blue, or indifferent) with whom we share this nation and this planet.
