Trade talks for Saints’ Marshon Lattimore are intensifying

The Saints have taken over as head coach Dennis Allenalthough this decision is not expected to pave the way for a mass sale of veterans before today’s trade deadline. However, one name in particular continues to attract a lot of attention.

Cornerback Marshon Lattimore is once again a trading target. As the deadline approaches, veteran insider Josina Anderson reports that talks are “heating up,” adding that multiple suitors are in play. According to Nick Underhill of NewOrleansFootball.com, a high third-round pick could be enough in this case. In a report last weekend, the Chiefs were named as suitors for the four-time Pro Bowler.

Kansas City has already added something offensively (receiver). DeAndre Hopkins) and defense (edge rusher). Josh Uche) before the deadline. The defending champions improved to 8-0 last night and are therefore an obvious candidate for further steps in the coming hours. Kansas City could use a starting-caliber corner Jaylen Watson He is unlikely to return this season.

Lattimore’s future with the Saints has long been discussed, and leading up to the draft, teams were aware he was on the market. In the end, New Orleans decided to keep the 28-year-old on the roster (although a trade was considered). After Lattimore received an option bonus shortly before the start of the year, he is only entitled to the outstanding portion of his base salary of $1.21 million in 2024.

The former Defensive Rookie of the Year is also under contract through the 2025 and 26 seasons and is one of many Saints involved in financial adjustments related to the cap. Lattimore is entitled to base salaries of $16 million and $16.5 million for those years, but none of that compensation is guaranteed. However, he is due a roster bonus of $2 million on March 20 next year (and the following). That, along with the projected cap limits of $31.41 million and $28.56 million, makes his pact one that will require further changes should a trade be worked out.

Lattimore spent his entire eight-year career with the Saints, starting all 97 of his appearances. The Ohio State product has battled multiple injuries in recent years, a factor that prospects take into consideration. Nonetheless, he could provide effective coverage play for any number of teams looking for a boost in the secondary. Teams have until 3 p.m. to complete a trade involving Lattimore or other players the 2-7 Saints might be willing to part with.
