Cedar Rapids police expect crime to decline in 2024

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Statistics indicate crime in the city will be down in 2024, according to Cedar Rapids Police Department statistics.

Statistics released Tuesday morning show declines in homicides, aggravated assault, burglaries, shootings and car thefts in the first 10 months of 2024 compared to last year and the five-year average.

The Cedar Rapids police highlighted the decline in shootings as a bright spot.

“Long-term efforts, including the use of community policing and building strong relationships, continue to produce positive results,” CRPD wrote in a Facebook post.

“These results are only possible because of a community-wide effort involving law enforcement, the justice system, community organizations and individuals making direct contact with those most likely to engage in criminal behavior,” the post continued.

Here’s a breakdown of each of the six categories that CRPD says are intended to provide an overview of crime in the city.
