Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired his defense minister Yoav Gallant on Tuesday, saying “significant differences” had arisen between them over the conduct of the war.

Netanyahu’s decision, set to take effect within 48 hours, follows months of increasingly public feuds between the two men and comes as Israel finds itself in the midst of a multi-front conflict with enemies including Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran.

“In the midst of war, full trust between the prime minister and the defense minister is needed more than ever,” Netanyahu said in a statement from his office.

“Although there was so much trust in the first few months of the election campaign and very fruitful work was done, this trust between me and the Defense Minister has unfortunately broken down in the last few months.”

Gallant’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
