Valdosta teen arrested after shooting man while playing with a gun

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) – Valdosta police say a 15-year-old is behind bars after shooting a man while he was playing with a gun inside a home.

The 15-year-old is charged with aggravated murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a minor. Additional charges are pending, according to VPD.

Police said the incident occurred around 5 p.m. Monday after a call came in that someone had been shot at a home in the 500 block of Brookdale Circle.

According to VPD, officers arrived at the home and found 20-year-old Amarius Dakwon Shivers with a gunshot wound to the head. Officers immediately attempted to administer first aid to Shivers.

However, he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Valdosta Police detectives and crime scene personnel then responded to investigate the incident.

As investigators attempted to interview people who had left the home when officers arrived, police said a concerned mother called 911 and reported that her 15-year-old son was at her home and was the one involved in the incident The shooter involved could be police.

Officers then came to her home and took the teenager into custody.

An investigation revealed that several teenagers were at the home on Brookdale Circle when the 15-year-old was allegedly playing with a gun. The gun went off, hitting Shivers and killing him.

This is an ongoing investigation.
