A bus crash in Sioux County sends more than a dozen students to the hospital

ORANGE CITY, Iowa (KTIV) – Twenty people, including 18 students, were hospitalized for various injuries after Iowa authorities said a pickup truck and a school bus collided Tuesday morning.

According to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at the intersection of 430th Street and Marsh Avenue, a rural area three miles north of Granville, Iowa.

According to the sheriff’s office, at approximately 7:42 a.m., a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by 23-year-old Elliot Dykstra of Alton, Iowa, was traveling eastbound on 430th Street. At the same time, 76-year-old John Kooiman was driving a Unity Christian High School school bus south on Marsh Avenue. According to the sheriff’s office, the two vehicles collided at the intersection.

Dykstra, the driver of the pickup, was taken to a Sheldon hospital for serious injuries.

Bus driver Kooiman and 18 students were taken to a hospital in Orange City. Authorities said their injuries ranged from minor to severe, with one student requiring transfer to another hospital and another student currently under further observation.

“The Sheriff’s Office, working with Unity Christian High School and Orange City Christian School, was able to notify all parents and direct them to contact Orange City Area Health System to be successfully connected with their child,” Das said Sheriff’s Office released in a press release.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol are still investigating the crash. As of Tuesday, the sheriff’s office has not released information about possible charges.

The Orange City Police Department, Hospers and Granville Fire Departments, and Alton, Granville, Hospers, Orange City and Sheldon Emergency Services were called in to assist with the accident.
