Penn State Police are investigating the incident in which Jason Kelce’s phone was smashed

Penn State University police and public safety are investigating an incident in which Jason Kelce slammed a fan’s phone on the ground Saturday after he was taunted and used homophobic slurs, a PSU police spokesman confirmed Tuesday.

The spokesman said the procedure to investigate the incident was still ongoing. A report on the incident in the PSU police daily crime log lists criminal mischief and disorderly conduct as felonies.

According to the report, an officer observed “a patron damaging personal property” at an intersection in front of Beaver Stadium on Saturday. The exchange, which occurred before the Nittany Lions’ game against Ohio State, was captured on video.

In the video, a fan walking behind Kelce can be heard making a homophobic slur regarding the relationship between pop star Taylor Swift and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, Jason’s brother: “Kelce, how does it feel like that “Your brother is a fa– for dating?” Taylor Swift?”

Hearing the question, Jason turned around and appeared to grab the phone of the fan who said the insult and throw it on the ground. The fan demanded that Jason give him the phone back, to which Jason replied, “Who’s the father now?”

Kelce, a former Philadelphia Eagles center, spoke out about the altercation on ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown,” saying he was “not happy about anything that happened.”

“I’m not proud of it,” Kelce said during the opening segment of the show before Monday night’s game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs.

“In a heated moment, I decided to meet hate with hate, and I don’t think that’s a productive thing to do,” Kelce said. “I really don’t. I don’t think it creates a discourse and (I don’t think) it’s the right way to do things. In that moment I fell to a level I shouldn’t have.

“The bottom line is that I want to live my life by the ‘golden rule’ – I try to live my life.” That’s what I’ve always been taught. I try to treat people with decency and respect and I will continue to do that, even if I didn’t succeed this week.”

Kelce steered the conversation toward coverage of Monday night’s game, saying he “doesn’t think that’s necessarily the platform to go into more detail.”
