“Death Becomes Her” grosses $1 million, “Sunset” hits $1.7 million

As a number of new Broadway shows prepare for opening and the holiday season, Death is with her, The musical adaptation of the 1992 film got off to a promising early start last week.

The production, starring Jennifer Simard, Megan Hilty and Michelle Williams, grossed $1.07 million in its first week of seven performances, which included a Halloween tie-in for the supernatural production. The musical’s premiere is scheduled for November 21st at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater.

Sunset Blvd. continued to build on its momentum, with the Nicole Scherzinger-led revival grossing $1.72 million, making it the industry’s top three highest-grossing show of the week Hamiltonand the St. James Theater is at nearly 95 percent capacity.

Romeo + Julietthe other new hot ticket, starring Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, grossed just over $1 million in its first full week of performances after opening at the Circle in the Square Theater.

Evil led industry sales with nearly $2.3 million, followed by The Lion Kingat $1.9 million, Sunset Blvd., Hamilton with $1.71 million and MJ the Musical with $1.5 million.

Overall, industry revenue took a hit, with cumulative totals down nearly 3 percent from the previous week and attendance largely flat as Broadway productions competed with Halloween festivities last week.

In addition to Death suits hera number of new productions are also in previews, including Swept awaya new musical about four shipwreck survivors that began previews last week at the Longacre Theater and grossed $357,470 from five performances at 82 percent capacity. Tammy Faye, A new musical featuring music by Elton John played six preview performances at the Palace Theater last week to 64 percent capacity. Both will need to increase their numbers at the start of their opening nights on November 19th and 14th, respectively.
