The video in which Taylor Swift encourages fans to vote is from 2018

Topline

A video of billionaire pop star Taylor Swift urging fans to vote on Election Day is going viral, garnering millions of views on social media – but the video was actually shot in 2018, although the singer recently reminded fans to vote Choice to go Instagram post earlier this week.

Important facts

In the video, which Swift was filmed speaking into her phone’s front camera and edited with an Instagram filter, she urges her young fans to go vote.

The video went viral on social media on Tuesday, with several X users posting the video, garnering thousands of likes and millions of views.

The video was actually filmed and posted to Swift’s Instagram Story in 2018, the year she endorsed Democrat Phil Bredesen over Sen. Marsha Blackburn in Tennessee’s U.S. Senate race, the first time she had publicly endorsed one candidates supported (Blackburn won).

The resurfaced video appears to come from a TikTok account, @taylor_swift_videos — as many reposts of the video on

The video was posted by user Bill Madden, who has more than 270,000 followers and says he is a singer-songwriter focused on “preventing a Trump dictatorship.”

Call to Activism, an X account with more than 1.1 million followers that supports Vice President Kamala Harris, also reposted the video, reaching more than 500,000 views.

Cons

Swift reminded fans this week to vote, just not in this viral video. She celebrated the end of the U.S. leg of her Eras tour in an Instagram post on Monday, giving a “friendly but critically important reminder that tomorrow is the U.S. election and your last chance to vote.”

Important background

Swift made her highly anticipated endorsement of Harris just minutes after her Sept. 10 debate against former President Donald Trump, writing on Instagram that Harris is a “steadfast, gifted leader.” Citing an AI-generated image Trump posted on Truth Social that falsely implied she had supported him as part of her decision to speak out, Swift said she wanted to combat misinformation. Swift’s endorsement is considered impactful because she directed hundreds of thousands of users to voter registration sites by posting links to her Instagram Story. About 406,000 users clicked on a vote.gov link within 24 hours of Swift posting it on Instagram in September. Clicks on the Instagram post accounted for more than half of all visits to the site in that 24-hour period.

Forbes rating

According to Forbes estimates, Swift’s net worth is $1.6 billion. Last year she joined the ranks of billionaires, thanks largely to a boost from the Eras Tour, which is now the highest-grossing tour of all time.
