2 people have been arrested after a 6-month-old baby suffered severe burns

WATERBURY, CT (WFSB) – Two people have been arrested in connection with a disturbing incident involving a 6-month-old child who suffered second and third degree burns.

Waterbury police began investigating the case after receiving a report from Saint Mary’s Hospital on Oct. 24.

The baby was taken to the hospital emergency room with severe burns on the body, requiring immediate medical attention.

Investigators from the Waterbury Police Department’s Special Victims Unit began an investigation and identified the child’s mother, 36-year-old Keturah Williams, and her partner, 51-year-old Damon Martin, as the individuals responsible for the child’s care at the time The child was responsible for the incident.

According to police, the child rolled off the bed and landed on a hot electric heater, causing injuries.

Investigators believe both Williams and Martin were present when the incident occurred but delayed seeking medical attention.

During this time, the couple also consumed alcohol and drugs, which further impaired their ability to respond appropriately to the child’s injuries, police said.

After treatment at Saint Mary’s Hospital, the child was taken to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center for further care.

The child has since been released from the hospital but remains in the care of the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF).

On November 4, 2024, Williams and Martin were arrested and charged with risk of injury to a minor, impairing the morals of a child and cruelty to persons.

Both suspects surrendered to authorities on November 5, 2024.

Williams was held on a $75,000 bond, while Martin was held on a higher bond of $150,000. Both are awaiting legal action.

In addition to the victim, two other children lived in the apartment at the time of the incident. They have since been removed from the home and placed in the care of DCF.

The investigation is ongoing and authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward.
