GRASS VALLEY — A Nevada County resident was arrested after he allegedly shot his neighbor’s dog, with evidence indicating he was in no immediate danger.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said they received a 911 call Monday saying they saw someone shoot a dog with a shotgun, killing it. The caller identified 52-year-old Grass Valley resident Kevin Barber as the suspect, while it was later determined that the dog belonged to a neighbor.

Officers soon arrived at the Barber’s Brooks Road property where the shooting allegedly occurred, but he had left the property. Animal control officers soon found Barber on the street and he was arrested by officers.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for Barber’s property and seized the shotgun allegedly used in the incident. According to officials, one spent and one unused cartridge case were also found.

No evidence was found that Barber was attacked or was in immediate danger by the dog, officials say. The original witness also reported that the dog was not behaving aggressively.

Barber is charged with animal cruelty and booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.
