A 28-year-old father in Texas accused of intentionally running over and killing the mother of his 1-year-old child is retaining his parental rights to that child as he awaits his upcoming trial for his role in her death.

Randall County Court Judge James W. Anderson on Monday rejected an attempt by the victim’s mother to terminate the parental rights of Ulise DeLao, who is currently free on bail after being convicted of manslaughter in the killing of Brittney A. Torres was indicted earlier this year, court records reviewed by Law&Crime.

The civil case seeks to terminate DeLao’s parental rights and allow Torres’ mother, Jaqueline Sanchez, to become the little boy’s legal guardian, records show.
