Lancaster County officials report the death of an inmate

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – A 62-year-old Lancaster County Department of Corrections inmate died Monday at a local hospital.

Melvin Botts, who had been in custody since October 16, was hospitalized on October 18 due to a chronic illness. He remained in hospital until his death. Botts was serving a prison sentence for driving while revoked and was awaiting trial in a separate case. His sentence was scheduled to end on November 4th.

The cause of death is not clear. In keeping with protocol, a grand jury will investigate the incident, as is required whenever an inmate dies in custody.
