The Gators need to pay attention to QB Lagway’s injury before ruling him out against Texas

Florida quarterback DJ Lagway has not been ruled out for this week’s game at No. 5 Texas because his left hamstring injury is “less serious” than initially feared, coach Billy Napier said.

Lagway, a true freshman and ESPN’s No. 8 prospect in the 2024 class, suffered the injury in the first half of Saturday’s game against Georgia. He later appeared on the Florida sideline on crutches and with a brace on his left leg. Lagway underwent an MRI over the weekend.

“The good news is that we have received positive information about this,” Napier said Monday. “We believe the injury is less serious and there is a path to recovery and return.”

Napier said Lagway’s status for the Texas game will be clearer by midweek. Lagway had 47 passing yards and a touchdown and 18 rushing yards as Florida took an early lead against Georgia.

Freshman Aidan Warner replaced Lagway and completed just 7 of 22 passes for 66 yards and an interception, allowing Georgia’s final touchdown in a 34-20 win. Warner is close to starting in Texas if Lagway can’t play.

Florida has already lost senior quarterback Graham Mertz this season to a torn ACL in his left knee. Lagway took over after Mertz was injured.
