11-year-old girl fends off attempted kidnapper with branch

BOULDER, Colo. (KKTV/Gray News) – A child is safe after fending off a would-be kidnapper in Boulder, Colo., last week.

According to police, the 11-year-old girl was on her way to school on October 28 when a man began following her on a bicycle. He soon caught up with her and grabbed her shoulder.

The quick-thinking girl fought back and escaped.

“The child … grabbed a tree branch and struck the man, causing him to let go,” Boulder police said in a news release about the incident late last week. “The child then ran to school.”

The girl later told her mother what happened, and the mother reported the incident to police on October 30.

The suspect remains at large as of Monday. The child described him as a man wearing black clothing with a mask and “circular” sunglasses with colored lenses covering his face. The suspect may have spoken Spanish.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to email Detective Taylor Hickam of the Boulder Police Department at [email protected] or call 303-441-1936
