JPD homicide victim linked to 2022 death of 9-year-old

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – A man killed Monday in Jackson had ties to the fatal 2022 shooting of a 9-year-old girl.

Jackson police have confirmed the victim of a Nov. 4 shooting in the 3500 block of Bowers Street is Tristan Kimes.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On October 2, 2023, Kimes was sentenced to 18 months in the Mississippi Department of Corrections for child neglect.

The sentence was part of a plea deal after Kimes pleaded guilty to giving a gun to nine-year-old Lily Bracey.

According to police, Bracey had just returned home from school when she was shot. Kimes allegedly gave the girl the gun to play with. He was initially charged with contributing to the neglect or delinquency of a child, tampering with evidence, possessing a stolen firearm and aggravated abuse or battery of a child.

It was unclear how long Kimes spent in MDOC custody.
