Update on Tuesday night’s shooting incident in Rumford

RUMFORD, Maine (WABI) – An update has been provided on the shooting incident that led to an hour-long shelter in place in Rumford.

The Rumford Police Chief said they were called to a reported active shooter on State Route 232 in Rumford Corner Village on Tuesday evening around 8 p.m.

Officers determined that a man fired several shots in the area, then drove his vehicle into a home at 61 State Route 232, set the home on fire and fired several more shots into the home before running away.

While they searched the area, police, along with assistance from Maine State Police, issued a shelter-in-place order.

Around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, police found the man with a life-threatening injury after he allegedly shot himself. He was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment.

No one was injured in the incident and investigators remained on scene until the early hours of Wednesday morning.
