Chicago police shooting: Charges announced in killing of CPD officer Enrique Martinez in East Chatham near E. 80th St. | LIVE

CHICAGO (WLS) – Charges were filed Wednesday in the shooting death of a young Chicago police officer.

Martinez, a nearly three-year veteran of the department, was killed just after 8 p.m. Monday night as he and others conducted a traffic stop in East Chatham.

According to police, there were three people in the car. One of them opened fire on Martinez, killing him and the passenger in the front seat, according to police. This person’s identity has not been released.

The suspected shooter initially tried to flee the scene and ran into a second police officer with his vehicle.

That person was later taken into custody, Snelling said.

Snelling announced charges in the shooting Wednesday afternoon along with Mayor Brandon Johnson and Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx.

The police initially did not provide any information about the accused person.
