Live Updates: Unknown Death at Geisel Library

Wednesday, November 6th

1:50 p.m. update

On November 6th at around 11:35 a.m., an unknown person fell to his death from the eighth floor stairwell of the Geisel Library. Later at 12:50 p.m., several UCPD officers along with library staff closed the library early and sent patrons outside. Four UCPD cars parked in front of the Silent Tree and two UCPD cars left at 12:55 p.m. after the library was evacuated.

According to the library’s communications and engagement office, the library does not currently believe the individual was a UCSD student. Librarians will provide students with the Geisel Library Security Office phone number so they can pick up their belongings from the library.

At 1:06 p.m., UC San Diego posted a statement on open until 8:00 p.m. Further information on tomorrow’s construction times will be made available as soon as we have information to share.”

At 1:44 p.m., a timely alert was issued by UC San Diego stating that the incident “posed no threat to our campus community” and that further updates would follow

UCSD’s Office of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is holding office hours today in light of the incident.

2:55 p.m. update

The Communications and Engagement Office said at 2:45 p.m The Triton“This morning at approximately 11:35 a.m. we received a report of an incident at the Geisel Library in which an individual who was not enrolled as a student died. As we mourn this loss, our focus is on supporting one another. The library will remain closed for the remainder of the day, but counseling and other services will be available.”

3:15 p.m. update

At 3:14 p.m., Executive Vice Chancellor Elizabeth H. Simmons’ office sent an email to all UC San Diego academics, staff and students saying, “Out of an abundance of caution, the Geisel Library is closed for the remainder of the year closed.” day. Those planning to take courses should check their Canvas for further details regarding course relocations.”
