ForbesToday’s word number 1236 with tips, hints and answers for Wednesday, November 5th

It’s Thor’s day and those of you out there who aren’t still hungover from this week’s big election are probably distracting yourself with more entertaining things like games and puzzles. Apparently Wordle. In any case, yesterday I presented you with a special challenge. Today I will reveal the answer.

Here was yesterday’s puzzle:

Four animal people have to cross a dangerous bridge at night. You only have a flashlight and the bridge is too dangerous to cross without it. Only two people can sit on the bridge at a time, and each person walks at a different speed:

  • Mr. Fox The crossing takes 1 minute.
  • Mrs. Alligator The crossing takes 2 minutes.
  • Mr. Orangutan The crossing takes 5 minutes.
  • Mrs Sloth The crossing takes 10 minutes.

When two animals cross paths, they must walk at the pace of the slower animal. The goal is for everyone to cross the bridge in 17 minutes or less. How do they do that?

The solution:

  • Mr. Fox and Mrs. Alligator cross paths first. That takes time 2 minutes.
  • Mr. Fox returns. This takes 1 minute. 3 minutes have now passed.
  • Mr. Orangutan and Ms. Sloth cross paths, which takes 10 minutes. 13 minutes have now passed.
  • Mrs. Alligator comes back and takes two minutes. 15 minutes have now passed.
  • Finally, Mr. Fox and Mrs. Alligator cross paths, which takes another two minutes 17 minutes in total.

I guessed VOTER for obvious reasons, and I ended up getting pretty lucky. There are only 3 words left! EVICT, which also seems somewhat contemporary in its own strange way, left me with only one thing left: EVENT for the win! Plus, well, kind of fitting. . . .

Today’s Wordle etymology

The word Event goes back to Latin origins. It comes from the Latin word Eventuswhich means “result, event or accident,” which in turn is derived from the verb Eveningwhich means “to come out, happen, or result.” Evenire itself arises from ex- (“off”) and venire (“come”).

The term came into Middle French Eveningretaining a sense of something that is happening or taking place, particularly as an outcome or outcome. In English, Event took on its modern meaning in the late 16th century, denoting a notable event or occurrence, often with a sense of significance.
