HFC members block the social security bill

While all eyes During the election, two members of the House Freedom Caucus went unfaithful during Tuesday’s pro forma session to try to thwart a widely supported Social Security bill — and raid their leadership again.

In a parliamentary maneuverRep. Bob Good (R-Va.) asked for unanimous consent to put the Social Security Fairness Act on the table. Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.), who presided, raised no objection. House Republican leadership had no idea HFC members would do this. It violates protocol for pro forma meetings.

The bill they presented has 330 supporters and enough signatures on the dismissal petition to force a vote. HFC members complain about the success. The legislation would remove limits on Social Security benefits to which state employees or their spouses are entitled if they also receive state pensions.

GOP leadership thinks about what to do next.
