Defending a man accused of murder in Kentucky. MP pleads for a change of venue

SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) – A change of venue hearing was held Thursday for a man accused of killing a Scott County deputy.

Steven Sheangshang is accused of shooting deputy Caleb Conley during a traffic stop last May. Police later said he had been on a crime spree through Fayette County.

He is charged in Scott County with murder of an officer, robbery and two counts of wanton endangerment.

His attorneys requested that his trial be moved from Scott County to Jefferson County.

They cited the high profile of the case in Scott County as the reason for the requested change.

The judge made no decision but suggested Shelby County as a possible venue. The judge is expected to rule on that request next week.

Sheangshang’s lawyers also requested a change to his isolation in prison. The judge granted a request that the prison let him out of his cell for more than an hour a day and allow him to read more than one book a month. The defense also asked that the lights in Sheangshang’s cell be turned off, but the judge said the decision was up to the prison.
