Will the Raiders have a key defensive star back for the Bengals?

The Las Vegas Raiders have suffered numerous injuries to key parts of their defense this season. They lost starting defenseman Malcolm Koonce just days before the first game of the season. Weeks later, they lost starting player Marcus Epps to a non-contact injury.

Several other players on defense have missed this season due to injuries.

On Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Raiders nearly suffered a fatal blow when Spillane was sidelined with an injury. The veteran linebacker missed some time last week against the Chiefs with a knee injury, but returned to the game shortly after.

At first the injury appeared to be serious as Spillane had to be helped off the field. Spillane and the Raiders are not taking any chances as he is far too valuable to the Raiders for them to lose, especially given the other injuries the defense has suffered this season.

The veteran linebacker did not practice this week prior to Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals and is officially listed as questionable.

Other than defensive end Maxx Crosby, Spillane is the most important player on the Raiders defense. He has played 99.8 percent of the team’s defensive snaps and is one of the best linebackers in the league.

Spillane leads the National Football League in solo tackles and is in the top five in total tackles this season. Still, Raiders coach Antonio Pierce says he has no plans to slow down Spillane, even after nearly losing Spillane to injury last week and putting a lot of strain on him.

“Yes No. “He’s a linebacker,” Pierce said. “He has a lot to offer.” Pierce said. “It’s a contract year for him. He is a warrior. He loves the ball. He loves being a leader. He is a captain. I went to him right after he came out of the tent.”

“I thought, as we all thought, that he was done. And he said, ‘No, I’m fine. I’m going out of there.’ I
I think it’s just one of those things that scared him. But between him and Maxx [Crosby]You can’t take these two guys off the field and you want more players like that.”

Spillane hasn’t practiced this week and rarely misses time. His endurance and reliability were a big reason why the Raiders signed the veteran. He more than held up his end of the bargain and exceeded everyone’s expectations, except probably his own. Pierce said Spillane will be a game-time decision, but Spillane’s history of rarely missing time suggests there’s a good chance he will play. Time will tell if that is the case.

“He won’t practice today,” Pierce said. “And knowing Robert, it will be a game-time decision, and knowing Robert, hopefully he will play.”
