The next card on the UFC schedule, UFC Vegas 100, takes place on Saturday, November 9th when the promotion returns to the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the main event, longtime UFC welterweight Neil Magny fights up-and-coming Carlos Prates at 170 pounds. In the co-main event, Gerald Meerschaert meets the recently signed Reinier de Ridder in the middleweight division.

UFC Vegas 100 Main Event: Neil Magny vs. Carlos Prates

Neil Magny (29-12) is the No. 15 fighter in the official UFC welterweight rankings. The 37-year-old has been a member of the UFC roster since February 2013 and has a 22-11 record in the UFC. During his time with the promotion, Magny earned the most decision victories in the promotion’s history (14). Magny also has the most fights with the UFC at welterweight (33), most wins at welterweight (22), longest fight time at welterweight (6:51:58), most significant strikes at welterweight (1,418) and most total strikes landed in the 170-pound division (2,538).

Magny has long been considered the gatekeeper of the UFC’s welterweight division. Defeating Magny brings its rewards. In 2022, Shavkat Rakhmonov defeated Magny via submission. Rakhmonov is now the No. 3 ranked 170-pounder and the next fighter to wait for UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad. In 2023, Ian Machado defeated Garry Magny by decision. Garry is headlining a UFC card against Joaquin Buckley in Tampa in December and is ranked No. 7 in the weight class. Magny’s most recent opponent, Michael Morales, is currently ranked 12th. Morales knocked out Magny in August.

Magny is trying to avoid consecutive losses. The last time he suffered consecutive defeats was his second and third fights on the promotion in 2013.

Carlos Prates (20-6) entered the UFC in 2023 with a knockout win on a card on Dana White’s Contender Series. Since then, the 31-year-old has gone 3-0 with the UFC, winning each of those fights by knockout. Prates also received performance bonuses for each of his three knockouts. He comes off after an interruption by Li Jingliang on August 17th. who had never been unconscious before he fell to Prates.

After that win, which came at UFC 305, I wrote about Prates: “Carlos Prates looked relaxed and at ease in his attack against Li Jingliang. He did well early on, landing with plenty of power at a good clip while also showing good head movement and defense. He controlled the fight from start to finish, never overextending himself and never putting himself in danger, having injured Li more than once. There was some concern about how Prates would perform if the tough Li pushed him into deep waters. This did not happen as Prates became the first fighter in the UFC to finish Li through punches.

“Prates is on a ten-fight winning streak and three UFC knockouts. The 31-year-old deserves a step up in the competition.”

Prates’ three UFC knockouts all occurred in 2024. He’s unlikely to win Fighter of the Year in 2024, that goes to Alex Pereira or Ilia Topuria, but he’s on a pretty good track in his first year with the promotion.
