Extreme fire danger in Philadelphia region Friday as drought worsens; if it could rain again

Dry air, windy conditions and lots of dry vegetation such as dead leaves and pine needles are contributing to a high fire danger across the Philadelphia region on Friday. Due to this fire threat, we have issued a NEXT weather warning for Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. A warning is also in effect for the region due to the fire risk.

The country’s latest drought monitor was released Thursday, and large portions of Atlantic and Burlington counties are now in the extreme drought level, with the vast majority of the region still experiencing severe drought. This appears to be the worst drought in our region in over 20 years.

The last time extreme drought affected 20% or more of the state in New Jersey was in 2002.

Conditions have already worsened Forest fires in our areaand conditions on Friday appear to be favorable for rapid fire spread. A secondary cold front will produce gusty winds up to 20-30 mph in the afternoon, and much drier air at the surface will result in lower relative humidity levels.

Burning bans are in effect in several parts of our region. Any spark from faulty lawn equipment, a catalytic converter or a smoldering discarded cigarette butt could start a fire that could get out of control.

Temperatures will still be above average on Friday, in the low 70s, but an increasing blast of cool air will bring the temperature back down to the average high of 5°C on Saturday, which is particularly impressive given the warmth we’ve had. will feel very cool.

The fire danger remains on Saturday, but is not as great.

On Sunday we have a good chance of measurable rain for the first time in over 40 days. Clouds will increase as a new system approaches from the west, and showers are possible late Sunday into early Monday. Although it doesn’t look like a drenching rain, widespread showers could bring up to 0.25 to 0.5 inches to the area, and every little bit helps.

We also observe the tropics as Raphael moves through the Gulf of Mexico. The hurricane will continue to weaken and could dissipate in the Gulf without making landfall again. We’ll keep you updated.
