21-year-old man dies in motorcycle accident in Groton

GROTON, CT (WFSB) – A 21-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle accident early Friday morning in Groton.

Groton City Police identified the driver as Elijah W. Hummel of Groton.

According to police, they responded to the accident on Fort Hill Road around 12:45 p.m

An officer reported that a motorcycle landed on the roadway and its driver was nearby with serious injuries.

The officer immediately requested additional first responders and emergency medical services to assist at the scene.

The driver, later identified as Hummel, was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Hummel was pronounced dead by medical staff upon arrival.

The initial investigation into the accident revealed that Hummel was driving a 2024 Kawasaki ZX-400 and was traveling westbound on Fort Hill Road at a high rate of speed. According to police, he lost control of his motorcycle, crossed the eastbound lane of Fort Hill Road and crashed into an unoccupied Jeep Cherokee parked in front of Midway Pizza.

Fort Hill Road between Depot and South Road was closed to traffic while the crash was investigated. It has now reopened.

The accident is still under investigation, police said.
