Illegal immigrant charged with murder of mother of four in AOC District

A man accused of strangling a naturalized U.S. citizen and mother of four to death in Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s district last year has been revealed to be an illegal immigrant who was released into the country after crossing the border was encountered by federal agents, a man said ICE official tells Fox News Digital.

Now the victim’s immigrant families are calling on President-elect Donald Trump to investigate the woman’s death. They say they want to know why he wasn’t detained at the border before they allegedly killed his landlady after she tried to evict him on murder charges. An unruly, unemployed tenant who loitered all day drinking alcohol and smoking weed .

They say the illegal immigrant, 20-year-old Deiby Vidal Carrillo, had a troubled past in his native Colombia but was not properly vetted before being released at the border and then allegedly Zoraida Leo, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic , killed Republican who, according to her sister, “realized the American dream” in 2018 when they both became naturalized citizens.

But Leo’s life ended on Dec. 5 when she confronted Vidal Carrillo about his unruly behavior and told him to pack his bags and leave, the family told Fox News Digital through their spokesman Hiram Monserrate, a former Democratic state senator New York and local Democrats, with county leader.

Vidal Carrillo strangled her to death, according to the Queens District Attorney’s Office. Leo’s son found her body at the entrance to a bathroom in her house. Vidal Carrillo was crying at the scene when police arrived and had scratch marks on his face, prosecutors say.

An autopsy determined she died from strangulation. She leaves behind three sons and a daughter.

Family members, residents and local leaders held a rally outside Leo’s home on Wednesday, demanding answers and demanding justice. They talked about how Leo had cared for her ailing 85-year-old mother before her death, was an active member of her church and was a member of a local women’s rights group.

They are also upset that local prosecutors did not make his immigration status public after the murder and that he never showed up for his immigration hearing before Leo’s death.

“I came here legally in the 1990s. My family followed the rules and achieved the American dream,” Maria Leo, the victim’s sister, told Fox News Digital in a statement.

“The feds released this criminal and he killed an innocent woman, my sister. The truth must be told that if the authorities had kept Davi Vidal in custody, my sister would still be alive today. There are other cases like this in our country” where people have become victims of migrants. That’s the reality.”

They say prosecutors are not transparent about the case and that they are kept in the dark about the progress of the case. They also want to know why the DA’s office did not disclose that he was in the country illegally. Fox News Digital asked these questions of the Queens District Attorney’s Office and received the following statement: “The defendant has been charged and remanded into custody. The case is proceeding normally.”

Maria Leo says she wants the whole truth to come out.

“We need honesty, no cover-ups, no hiding the facts. I don’t know why all the information about this case wasn’t disclosed from the start. Mr. President-elect, my family wants answers,” said Maria Leo.

Vidal Carrillo is now being held at Rikers Island, and ICE officials filed an immigration detention complaint with the jail challenging his release the same day he was arrested, an ICE official told Fox News Digital. The New York Post was first to report that Vidal Carrillo was an illegal immigrant.

ICE detainees are asking local law enforcement to notify immigration authorities when noncitizens are arrested on criminal charges.

A 2014 City Council law signed by former Mayor Bill de Blasio limited the city’s cooperation with ICE “detainers” except in certain cases where there was a risk to public safety. By law, the NYPD is not permitted to reveal a person’s immigration status to the public.

Vidal Carrillo crossed the southern border near San Luis, Arizona, in June 2022 as a 17-year-old before the Border Patrol served him with a notice to appear in court and began deportation proceedings against him, an ICE official tells Fox News Digital .

The family has had no contact with Ocasio-Cortez, who represents their district, and instead turned to Monserrate for help in their pursuit of justice. Fox News Digital contacted Ocasio-Cortez’s office for comment on Leo’s death but did not immediately receive a response.

The progressive congresswoman has previously called for abolishing ICE and has also proposed abolishing Homeland Security, the umbrella agency that oversees ICE.

In a video from September 2022 – just three months after Vidal Carrillo entered the US illegally – she said that immigrants and refugees coming to the US are “a tremendous blessing.” She called for a path to citizenship for all illegal immigrants in the United States

“Immigrants and refugees are one of the only reasons the United States is in any way prosperous or accomplished economically, demographically and socially. There are still distribution problems,” Ocasio-Cortez said, adding there is no difference between undocumented immigrants arriving in the U.S. today and those who arrived generations ago.

“And that includes undocumented immigrants, by the way, I’m talking about all immigrants,” she said, noting that about half of her district is made up of immigrants.

Meanwhile, Monserrate says that the Leo family is the typical American model family and that Zoraida Leo deserves to live in a safe community.

“They came to the United States legally from the Dominican Republic. They worked hard, raised a large family, went to church, bought a house and became civically active. America needs more of this. A secure border is a necessity, not a talking point, and all parties should work to ensure it,” Monserrate said at the rally.

“The Leo family and this largely immigrant community are calling on the President-elect, Senate Leader and House Speaker to put an end to the bipartisanship that has torn this nation apart and perpetuated a broken immigration system. Let’s fix it.” The American People don’t deserve less.”
