Cam Newton knows exactly what NFL fans want to see from their quarterback

Cam Newton knows what it’s like to struggle in the NFL. As a rookie, the quarterback was a special talent from day one, but he knows that winning and losing don’t always come with just that. After Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young went viral last week for his reaction to the win, Newton offered some advice to all quarterbacks.

Newton played 11 years in the NFL, including 10 with the Panthers. He’s seen the highs, an MVP win and a Super Bowl berth, as well as the lows of the sport, and through it all he thinks there’s one thing fans need.

On his podcast “Fourth and One,” Cam Newton responded to an edit from Bryce Young in which he talked about getting his first formation win in the NFL. He said quarterbacks need to give NFL fans hope through wins, losses and even ties. “You want some kind of validation as to why I support this team?”

He said when he first made it to the NFL, he couldn’t give away Panthers jerseys. Newton gave the team hope, even if they didn’t win at first. Newton revealed that someone once said the best thing about Steve Smith was that he “looked like he cared.”

The players who can succeed in the NFL can give their teams hope. This has been very rare in Carolina over the last, well, five seasons since they unceremoniously cut Newton. But on Sunday, Young provided just a glimmer of hope to a starving fan base.
