19-year-old in custody accused of killing 68-year-old in intentional collision

LUBBOCK, TX (NEWS RELEASE) – A 19-year-old is in custody and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following the death of 68-year-old Monte Lynch.

On May 31, 2024, Lubbock Police responded to Auburn Street and North Slide Road citing initial information indicating a collision with injuries involving a motorcycle driven by Lynch and a motorcycle driven by 19th -year-old Juan Reyna was involved.

Reyna fled the scene but was later located by a patrol. Lynch was taken to the hospital where he was treated for injuries sustained in the collision.

On June 19, Lynch was found dead in the 4700 block of County Road 6300 in Lubbock. His death was later ruled a homicide by the Lubbock County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Lubbock Metropolitan Area Special Crimes Unit was notified of the verdict on Aug. 29, triggering an investigation by Metro and LPD’s Forensics Investigation Unit.

Further investigation revealed that Lynch and Reyna got into a verbal altercation east of North Elkhart Avenue and Auburn Street on the night of the collision.

The investigation revealed that Lynch was attempting to leave the initial crime scene when Reyna chased him in his vehicle and intentionally struck Lynch and his motorcycle before fleeing the scene at Auburn Street and North Slide Road.

The case was presented to the Lubbock County District Attorney’s Office and an arrest warrant was issued for Reyna.

Reyna was located by investigators with the Lubbock County Texas Anti-Gang Unit and arrested on Friday, November 8th at 1:30 p.m. in the 700 block of East 34th Street.

He was transported to the Lubbock County Detention Center without incident.
