Dak Prescott plans to undergo season-ending surgery on the Cowboys’ injury-breaker

The news about Dak Prescott with the Cowboys keeps getting worse – and now there’s talk of possible season-ending surgery.

Prescott, coming off Sunday’s loss, plans to undergo season-ending surgery for a partially torn hamstring and is traveling to New York to see a specialist, ESPN reported.

If he elects the surgery, Prescott would reportedly be out for four months, which would extend beyond the end of the season even if the Cowboys manage to reverse their 3-5 start, sneak into the playoffs and the Reaching the Super Bowl.

But that seems highly unlikely given the circumstances.

Prescott did not play in the fourth quarter of the Cowboys’ loss to the Falcons on Sunday, leaving with a hamstring injury so serious that owner Jerry Jones said immediately after the game he was “concerned.”

The tenor regarding his status — both in the short term for Sunday’s showdown against the NFC East rival Eagles and for the rest of the season — changed steadily throughout the week, with NFL Network reporting Monday that Prescott is expected to miss several weeks become.

Then a trip to injured reserve seemed likely, with a partial hamstring tear — which he described as something he’d “never felt before” — alluded to as a diagnosis for the 31-year-old and Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones during a radio segment Friday, that in the worst case scenario his season could be over.

“I felt it when I got up from running,” Prescott said of his injury, according to the team’s website. “I can’t even say I felt the running. Maybe it was the tackle or something about the tackle. When I got up from it I felt something but didn’t think it was much. It was a physical game and often you feel something else and then they disappear.”

However, that hasn’t been the case, and a Cowboys season already reaching the level of disappointment and teetering on the brink of disaster could certainly get worse.

Prescott has racked up 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season, with the Cowboys struggling and spiraling even before losing the star quarterback who became the highest-paid player in NFL history when he before they signed a four-year contract extension worth $240 million. The season started with a win.

“It’s about keeping up my end of the deal,” Prescott told reporters after the Week 1 win.

But now, just 2-5 since a 33-7 win over the Browns, Dallas’ salvation depends on the performance of backup Cooper Rush, who has started six games in his NFL career.

Prescott must lead the Cowboys back to the playoffs and try to secure an elusive Super Bowl title for the franchise, but will have to wait another year.
