Vanoli uses history to motivate Turin against Juventus

Torino coach Paolo Vanoli used the story to motivate his team for today’s Derby della Mole against arch-rivals Juventus, but admits injuries forced them to do “something completely different”.

It starts at 7.45pm GMT at the Allianz Juventus Stadium.

You can follow all the build-up and action from this game, Cagliari-Milan and Venezia-Parma, on the live blog.

The Granata have not won the Turin derby since a 2-1 home result in April 2015 and have suffered just five draws and 15 defeats between Serie A and the Coppa Italia.

Their last away win against Juventus was 2-1 in April 1995.

“It’s a fantastic atmosphere, a special game. We know what derbies are like and we have to keep our emotions in check to give our best on the pitch,” Vanoli told DAZN.

To motivate the players, the coach showed them a video of Torino’s epic 3-2 win in March 1983, when they were 2-0 down and turned things around with three goals in four minutes.

“The 1983 derby was important for me because I wanted to show the players how to react to mistakes. You always need that courage. I just wanted to keep quiet and make sure the players heard the people around Toro who know what the Granata jersey really means. The motivation for this game comes naturally.”

Torino were at the top of the table for a time after a very strong start to the Serie A season, but inevitably fell after Duvan Zapata was ruled out for six months with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

To make matters worse, Che Adams is also out tonight with a hamstring strain, meaning Nikola Vlasic will have to be used in support of Tonny Sanabria.

“Of course we started the season with a group of strikers that we relied on for a lot of moves, but the Zapata injury and now Adams have changed everything,” admitted Vanoli.

“Vlasic and Sanabria have completely different characteristics than these two and we have to offer them a service with completely different mechanisms than the ones we have been working on all summer.”
