Boxing tonight: Ennis vs. Chukhadzhian 2 – live results

IBF welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis (34-0, 29 KOs) had a tougher time than expected, defeating his mandatory challenger Karen Chukhadzhian (24-3, 13 KOs) by unanimous decision in 12 rounds in their rematch on Saturday night Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Boots absorbed many heavy blows from the faster and more skilled Chukhadzhian, but his chin carried him through. Ennis defeated Chukhadzhian in the fifth round with a barrage of punches. In the tenth round, Chukhadzhian was penalized for holding.

The scores were 119-107, 117-109 and 116-110.

Ennis appeared frustrated during the fight, talking to people in the audience and appearing upset.

“I think it’s time for me to move up to 154,” Ennis said after the fight. “I hurt him a lot. I was in a hurry. I know if I fight a much better guy, I’ll be better. I need the top people. If we can get one of these people, we’ll make it happen. If not, 154, here I come. Maybe I can get the belts at 154. I want to fight the top guys.”

Today’s undercard results

WBC super flyweight champion Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez (21-0, 14 KOs) defeated Pedro Guevara (42-5-1, 22 KOs), stopping him in the third round. Bam hit Guevara twice with his left hand in round three.

On the first knockdown, Rodriguez hit Guevara with a left hook to the head. Moments later, Bam dropped the 35-year-old Guevara with a left uppercut. The referee, Ricky Gonzalez, waved it off at that point. The official time of the stoppage was 2:40 of the third round.

– Makes his super featherweight debut, former WBA 126-pound champion Raymond Ford (16-1-1, 8 KO) dominated Orlando Gonzalez (23-3, 13 KO) to win a ten-round unanimous decision.

Ford dropped Gonzalez twice in the contest, in rounds two and eight. Going into survival mode in the final two rounds, Gonzalez took the win and continued to pull ahead in rounds nine and ten to avoid elimination. It worked, but it wasn’t exciting to watch.

The notes

– 99-89
– 100-89
– 100-88

In rounds three through seven, Gonzalez looked good at times, landing quick combinations and moving away from Ford’s powerful right hook. In the sixth round, Ford hurt Gonzalez with a big right hook that was blocked by his glove. Gonzalez put his left hand over his face to protect himself, but Ford’s punch was so hard it still hurt him.

It was similar to how unified light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev attacked former WBA champion Dmitry Bivol with his hard punches that were blocked, but the force behind them transferred through Bivol’s gloves to his face. We saw the same thing with Ford’s shots that caused damage to Gonzalez.

The new power Ford is showing at 130 suggests he will be a different fighter in this weight class than when he fought at featherweight and was more of a finesse-level fighter.

The way Ford looked tonight, he would be the favorite against WBC super featherweight champion O’Shaquie Foster and WBA champion Lamont Roach. The one who could cause problems for Ford is WBO champ Emanuel Navarrete. If Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez wins the IBF title, that would be a great fight for Ford.

– Light heavyweight Manuel Gallegos (21-2-1, 18 KOs) dropped previously unbeaten favorite Khalil Coe (9-1-1, 7 KOs) four times and pulled off a ninth-round upset on the way. Coe was knocked down by heavy punches from volume hitter Gallegos in rounds 5, 7, 8 and 9. The referee waved it off after Goe was knocked to the ground by Gallegos with a left hand to the head in the first seven seconds of the ninth round.

Coe looked great early on as he delivered powerful uppercuts to the head of Gallegos in rounds one through four. Gallegos took over the fight in the fifth round, dropping Coe with a body shot with his left hand. This knockdown took a lot of energy out of Coe, who was slowly becoming exhausted by Gallegos’ punches and looked like he had nothing left after the fifth round.

– Middleweight contender Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams (17-1, 12 KOs) kept his career alive with a fifth-round technical knockout victory over Gian Garrido (11-2, 8 KOs). Williams struggled under pressure from Garrido in laps two to four.

In the fifth round, Ammo turned the corner and went on the attack, wounding Garrido with his left hand and then finishing him off with another barrage of powerful shots. The stoppage occurred at 1:04 of the fifth round.

Ammo was coming off an 11th-round knockout of Hamzah Sheeraz on June 1 and didn’t have the same confidence he had before that loss. Garrido backed up Williams, stunning him in the second round and hitting him with hard punches that gave him the impression he was on his way to another defeat. However, after a pep talk before the fifth round, Ammo became aggressive and knocked Garrido unconscious.

After the fight, Ammo said: “I’m back!” He said that he would fight for the world title in 2025 against one of the middleweight champions. If Ammo has to fight someone good to secure the world title, it might not end well for him. He looked too timid and slight to win a world title eliminator tonight.

WBC super flyweight champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (20-0, 13 KOs) meets Pedro Guevara (42-4-1, 22 KOs) in the co-feature. Bam 24 is the match that many fans are looking forward to more than the headlining fight. It’s obviously not the game Rodriguez fans were looking forward to, but it should still be fun for as long as it lasts.

Before the loss to Ball, fans had talked a lot about Ford and he was considered a rising star.

Jaron “Boots” Ennis (32-0, 29 KOs) will defend his IBF welterweight title in a rematch against Karen Chukhadzhian (24-2, 13 KOs) in their rematch in Philadelphia.
