The second death of a DPW employee in three months is cause for concern

For the second time in just three months, a DPW has died after sustaining injuries on the job.

On Saturday, the department announced the death of sanitation worker Timothy Cartwell.

Officials say he died after sustaining injuries while picking up trash in a West Baltimore alley.

Fox45 spoke with one of Cartwell’s colleagues at the scene of the incident.

The worker, who did not want to be named, said he saw Cartwell at training this week.

“We had a meeting about security guards. Last Wednesday, man. And that’s what happened to him, man, it’s sad,” the worker said.

Cartwell’s death follows the death of DPW employee Ronald Silver in August.

Silver died from a heat-related injury while working.

The week of his death, temperatures were in the triple digits.

At that time, the city ordered an independent review of the department’s safety protocols.

On the same day these findings were released, DPW Solid Waste Director Craig Jeter resigned.
