Mizzou scores 14 points in final 63 seconds, beats Oklahoma

Anyone order Tiger twists and Sooner turns?

You got ‘em.

Let’s begin with the score: Missouri football defeated Oklahoma 30-23 on Saturday in Columbia in the first meeting between the new and old conference foes in 13 years.

Now, let’s get to the bizarre, including 28 points in the final 3:18.

Defensive end Zion Young scored the game-winner, recovering a Triston Newson-forced fumble for Mizzou and returning it 17 yards to the end zone with 30 seconds remaining.

Shortly before that, Drew Pyne, starting for injured MU quarterback Brady Cook, led a 75-yard touchdown drive ending in a back-shoulder fade to Theo Wease Jr. to tie the game with 1:03 left in the game.

14 points, 63 seconds, Missouri win.

Right before Missouri staged some madness, Oklahoma looked like it had forced a Tigers collapse. Down seven points, the Sooners marched 75 yards and found Taylor Tatum for a touchown over the course of five-and-a-half minutes to tie the game at 16 with a little more than three minutes to play.

Then, Mizzou running back Jamal Roberts fumbled on the third play of Missouri’s response, and star Sooners safety Billy Bowman picked up and returned it 43 yards to the house to give OU the lead at the two-minute timeout.

Before the final three minutes, the game had been a snoozer, as neither offense had fully clicked into gear.

Somehow, some way, Missouri pulled a win out of the magician’s hat.

The Tigers are 7-2 with a 3-2 mark in SEC play. Who saw that coming with a minute left?

Missouri football vs Oklahoma score updates

Missouri 0 3 7 20 30 30

10:09 p.m.: Touchdown Missouri: Zion Young recovers a fumble and takes it to the house.

10:04 p.m.: Touchdown Missouri. Game-saver. Unbelievable pass and catch to Theo Wease Jr. with 1:03 to go. Tied ball game at 23. What a crazy, crazy game.

10:02 p.m.: Woah. 3rd and 16, game on the line, Drew Pyne hits Luther Burden deep and give Mizzou goal-to-go to save the game.

9:50 p.m.: Touchdown Oklahoma: Touchdown Oklahoma. Fumble six for the Sooners, as they take the drop from tight end Jordon Harris to the house. This game has flipped on its head again.

9:45 p.m.: Touchdown Oklahoma: The Sooners tie the game up on an 18-yard pass to Taylor Tatum.

9:43 p.m.: Oklahoma is driving with a chance to tie the game late. Sooners have made it inside the Mizzou 25-yard line with 4:40 left on the clock.

9:32 p.m.: The Missouri offense capitalizes. Touchdown Missouri, as Drew Pyne finds Brett Norfleet wide open on third-and-5 with goal to go, and suddenly Missouri extends its lead. But … Blake Craig misses a PAT, so it’s still just a seven-point lead.

9:24 p.m.: Marvin Burks forces a fumble, Tre’Vez Johnson recovers. Missouri will take over 30 yards from goal. Oklahoma QB Jackson Arnold completed a third-down pass, but that’s another big-time play from the Mizzou defense.

9:16 p.m.: Missouri picked up one first down on that drive but will now punt it away right before the third quarter ends. Luke Bauer’s boot takes a supremely friendly kick down to the OU 20 for a 61-yard punt. Then, Oklahoma gets a block in the back and holding penalties. That takes it all the way back to the OU10.

9:07 p.m.: A review by the officials overturns a decision of a completed pass at the line to gain for Oklahoma near midfield. Sooners punt down to the Missouri 5-yard line. Seems like it could a perilous position for Missouri, but this has been a bright start to the second half for the Tigers.

9:02 p.m.: Oklahoma converts a fourth-and-1 to avoid a second straight turnover on downs.

8:56 p.m.: Sound the alarm: Missouri touchdown. Theo Wease Jr. takes a 13-yard pass in the flat and glides between OU tacklers into the end zone for a score against his former team. Blake Craig makes the PAT. Mizzou has the lead.

Where did that drive come from? 12 plays, 59 yards, 6:34 elapsed.

8:45 p.m.: Oklahoma responds to the great field position with a four play turnover on downs on a fourth-and-1. Kristian Williams and Triston Newson combined for the stop.

8:41 p.m.: An altogether uninspiring three-and-out for the Mizzou offense to start the second half. Then, catch interference called on Mizzou after the punt, giving OU 15 free yards. Sooners will take over just inside Missouri territory.

8:35 p.m.: The second half is just a couple minutes away on Faurot Field. This hasn’t exactly been the thrilling matchup everyone expected in the offseason. Mizzou is still hanging around, but after 88 yards of total offense in the first half, a six-point deficit seems like a lot to overcome. Let’s see if anything changes.

8:20 p.m.: Oklahoma kicker Tyler Keltner makes a 57-yard field goal to close the first half, and the Sooners have a six-point lead, which is pretty close to insurmountable, the way this Mizzou offense is looking. Here’s why:

– Drew Pyne is 6-of-11 for 23 yards.

– Jackson Arnold is 8-of-13 for 43 yards.

– Oklahoma’s punter is 1-of-1 for 43 yards.

8:14 p.m.: Missouri essentially just burned clock as the clock ticked toward triple zeros. Bauer’s punt is returned to the OU34, but a late hit gives the Sooners 15 free yards. They have 10 seconds to make something happen from midfield.

8:04 p.m.: Missouri defense forces Oklahoma into a three-and-out, and after a holding call on the Tigers, Mizzou took over at the 15-yard line. A false start on Marcus Bryant immediately trotted the Tigers back to their own 10. Nate Noel carried it back to the 15 on first down.

The two-minute timeout hits. Let’s see if Drew Pyne and Co. can get anything in a two-minute drill.

7:58 p.m.: Nate Noel blown up in the backfield. A frantic Drew Pyne scramble for 4 yards. A throwaway with a seemingly open Brett Norfleet. Not exactly the best goal-to-go series I’ve ever seen. Field goal Missouri, though, and points on the board for the home team. Blake Craig converted a 25-yarder.

7:52 p.m.: It was backup cornerback Ja’Mariyon Wayne who recovered the muffed punt by Peyton Bowen. Drew Pyne immediately hit Theo Wease Jr. on a fade to the left sideline, setting up a rare first-and-goal for MU. Tigers take timeout. This feels like a must-take opportunity for a thus-far stagnant Mizzou offense. First-and-goal from about 9 coming up.

7:51 p.m.: Oklahoma muffs a punt return and Mizzou recovers. The Tigers will take over at the 28-yard line.

7:42 p.m.: For the second straight series, the Missouri defense stands strong in the red zone to force Oklahoma into a field goal attempt. But, for the second straight series, OU converts, this time from 35 yards. It’s 6-0 Sooners, and points feel hard to come by tonight.

7:40 p.m.: Jackson Arnold runs it 20 yards to the MU20, and Oklahoma is in the red zone again. It’s looking bleak for Mizzou so far.

7:38 p.m.: Turnover on downs for Mizzou. Tigers give it to Luther Burden on an end-around, and the receiver can’t beat the chasing OU pack to the edge. Oklahoma will take over inside the Mizzou half, at about the 44-yard line. Burden stayed down on the ground for a while after being forced out, but he walked up and off the field looking OK shortly after.

7:31 p.m.: Field goal Oklahoma. Sooners kicker Tyler Keltner converts a 40-yarder to open the scoring. That was set up by a special teams disaster on the fake punt — not the first time that’s happened to MU this season.

7:28 p.m.: After the instant goal-to-go possession, Missouri logged back-to-back sacks to push OU from the 10- to the 25-yard line. Sooners got a few back on a third-down QB keeper, but will face an approximately 40-yard field goal attempt on the first play of the second quarter.

Drew Pyne has -4 yards at the end of the first quarter. This has not been an offensive masterclass.

7:20 p.m.: Oklahoma just faked a punt with a jump-pass from the punter Luke Elzinga and ran it down to the Mizzou 10-yard line. First-and-goal for OU.

7:13 p.m.: Mizzou can’t come up with anything on the other end of the fumble recovery. The Tigers got a little bit of forward progress, but ended up facing a fourth-and-9 from the Oklahoma 39-yard line. Luke Bauer comes out to punt, and it sails into the end zone. That’s down as a 19-yard punt, after the touchback. For what it’s worth, it would have been an approximately 57-yard field-goal try.

7:07 p.m.: Fumble recovery confirmed. Daylan Carnell forced it, Johnny Walker Jr. jumped on it. Mizzou ball.

7:06 p.m.: Jackson Arnold fumbles for the second time tonight, but this time MU jumps on it. Arnold dropped it on a QB-keeper and the officials say Mizzou recovered. There will be a review.

7:02 p.m.: Not a good opening series for Missouri’s offense, which goes three-and-out. Nate Noel got blown up in the backfield. The third-down pass from tonight’s starter Drew Pyne — the first player not named Brady Cook to start for Mizzou at QB since Nov. 26. 2021 — to the flat was probably not the right choice. Punt drops at the OU 35-yard line.

7 p.m.: Jackson Arnold seemed to just drop the football on third down, and OU will punt after six plays. On the down before that Zion Young eased through the suspect Oklahoma O-line to bat down Jackson Arnold’s pass right in his face.

6:53 p.m.: Missouri wins the toss and defers. The Tigers will kick the ball to Oklahoma to start this game.

Also: Mizzou defensive end Eddie Kelly just ran right through the Oklahoma players to get to the student section. An official went to go collect him. As I’m typing this, Luther Burden III did the same. Logging an official prediction that we’re getting a chippy one tonight.

6:45 p.m.: The national anthem has played, Marching Mizzou has done its job, and Missouri-Oklahoma is about 10 minutes from kicking off. The next update you see here will be live from the game.

6:30 p.m.: Looks like everyone we expected to play will be available on the MU end. The stadium is filling up pretty fast in Columbia. Oklahoma fans in attendance gave Cayden Green’s name a pretty hearty “boo” as the OU-turned-Mizzou left guard was announced as a starter. Drew Pyne was met with general applause from the MU crowd.

5:54 p.m.: With about an hour to go until kickoff, we’re heading field-side to do some last-minute checks on Mizzou availability.

5:33 p.m.: News from the final availability report of the week: Missouri running back Nate Noel, starting left guard Cayden Green and backup offensive lineman Logan Reichert all are available to play today. That’s good news for MU.

On the Oklahoma end, the Sooners already had ruled out starting tailback Jovantae Barnes and, now, have listed backup running back Gavin Sawchuck as a game-time decision. Starting left tackle Michael Tarquin also will be a game-time decision on an already banged-up OU O-Line.

5:06 p.m.: In about 10 minutes, we’ll get each team’s final availability reports of the week. We know Cook and starting wide receiver Mookie Cooper are already strikes for Mizzou, but there’s still a final status to come for starting running back Nate Noel. As we wrote about here, we think that could be an important piece for Missouri today. The run game has stalled and looked fairly one-dimensional without him, and Mizzou needs every piece it can get.

5:01 p.m.: The current betting line has shifted even more in Oklahoma’s favor after Missouri’s QB news, with the Sooners now 3.5-point favorites in Columbia. The over/under is 42.5 points.

4:54 p.m.: Mizzou players and coaches have undergone Tiger Walk and entered the stadium via the south end zone facility. Brady Cook, who will not play today due to, we believe, multiple injuries, was with the team. It’s backup Drew Pyne’s day.

4:53 p.m.: Good evening from Memorial Stadium, where Missouri-Oklahoma is less than two hours away. It’s cloudy enough that a pregame B-2 flyover could be heard but not seen.
