Shooting at Tuskegee University in Alabama: 1 dead, several injured

One person was killed and several others injured in a shooting on the final day of homecoming week at Tuskegee University in Alabama early Sunday morning, according to the university.

The person who died was not a student at the university but was not named, a Tuskegee University news release said.

“Several others, including Tuskegee University students, were injured and are being treated at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery,” the university said. Authorities did not provide precise information about the number of other injured people or their health status.

It is unclear who opened fire or what led to the shooting. No arrests had been announced as of Sunday morning.

On Saturday evening, large crowds gathered at the university to celebrate Tuskegee’s 100th homecoming week. In a social media video, people can be seen taking cover in a parking lot as shots were fired.

The university said law enforcement “secured the scene” and the Alabama Bureau of Investigations was investigating.

“The university is in the process of completing student accountability and notifying parents,” Tuskegee University said. “Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”

The incident follows a series of shootings at homecoming events last month.

A shooting at Albany State University after a home game on Oct. 19 left one man dead and several others injured. It came on the same day that three people were killed and eight others injured at another homecoming event outside Lexington, Mississippi.

It also follows an Oct. 12 shooting near Tennessee State University in Nashville that left one man dead and nine other people injured after the school’s homecoming celebration.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
