Veterans Day is Monday, a federal holiday with roots in events that date back more than a century.

The holiday dates back to November 11, 1918, the official end of World War I, when an armistice between the Allied nations and Germany began at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The purpose of the day is to be a “celebration of honoring America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good,” the Department of Veterans Affairs explains on its website , declaring the holiday.

Because Veterans Day is a federal holiday, some stores and services may be closed for this reason. Here’s what you should know about the exchange and whether or not it will be open on Veterans Day.

Although Veterans Day is a federal holiday, both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be open during their normal hours on Monday, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

However, one aspect of the markets will not be open as bond markets remain closed on Monday.
