1. Venom: The Last Dance
Sony Pictures | Week 3
$16.225 million domestic weekend | $114.8 million domestic cume
$394.2 million worldwide cume

Sony’s trilogy hit Venom: The Last Dance topped the box office for the third time, during a sluggish post-election/Veterans Day weekend where the top three all broadly lived up to expectations. It earned $16.225 million from 3,905 locations, resulting in a PSA of $4,155, down -37% from last week. Total box office revenue fell by over 25% in 2023 compared to the same period The miracles debuted.

Interestingly, newbies Heretic And The best Christmas competition ever beat Venom on Friday when the threequel brought in just $3.95 million, but then the superhero movie bounced back with $7.15 million on Saturday and studio forecasts show the superhero movie brought in $5.125 million on Sunday. IMAX screens for Venom: The Last Dance The third frame grossed $1.5 million domestically ($2.3 million worldwide), bringing the domestic total to $10 million ($29.6 million online ) increased. It is currently still the leading title in this format.

Internationally, the film grossed an additional $33 million from over 22,300 theaters in 66 markets, bringing its international cume to $279.4 million ($82.8 million from China) and its worldwide cume to 394, $2 million increased. Sometime next week, it will easily pass the $400 million mark and become Sony’s biggest earner worldwide in 2024 Bad Boys: Ride or DieGlobal sales are $400.5 million. It will be interesting to see how close this result comes to consensus Venom: Let There Be CarnageWW revenue is $501.5 million.

2. The best Christmas pageant ever
Lionsgate | NEW
Opening weekend domestically to $11.1 million

In the photo finish with HereticLionsgate’s has early Sunday estimates The best Christmas competition ever We’re creeping up to No. 2, although with margins so slim we’ll have to wait for Monday’s actual data to officially announce this. Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company’s faith-based family film grossed $11.1 million from 3,020 locations for a PSA of $3,675, also near the high end of our forecast.

This is what the 3 day plan looked like…

  • Friday – $5 million
  • Saturday – $3.3 million
  • Sunday – $2.8 million

As part of an incentive screening program, the film was shown in theaters for one evening earlier this week, where it grossed $2.2 million, which is included in this weekend’s grosses. Considering the film’s reportedly modest budget, it should continue to perform adequately even in the face of competition for next week’s family dollar Red.

Like many Christian-friendly films this year, the film scored well with viewers, earning an “A” CinemaScore and a 98% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where it also received a very positive 89% rating from critics. The PostTrak rating was 4 1/2 stars among general audiences. The IFC release of Christmas Eve at Miller’s Point didn’t leave a dent pageant when it died at $73,500 at 405 locations for a PSA of $181.

3. Heretic
A24 | NEW
Domestic opening weekend grossed $11 million

A24’s religious-themed horror film received critical acclaim Heretic delivered $11,016,055 million on 3,221 screens in its opening weekend for a PSA of $3,420. However, the studio is calling this Hugh Grant’s “best debut weekend as a lead actor in over 20 years.” Music and lyrics opened in 2007 for $13.6 million. Still, the chance to watch the romantic comedy icon get back on her feet was clearly too delicious for many to pass up.

This is what the 3 day plan looked like…

  • Friday – $4,311,230
  • Saturday – $3,880,107
  • Sunday – $2,824,718

A24 wisely chose to release this broadly rather than relying on the typical platform, even though it wasn’t anywhere near the zeitgeist Civil War debuted to $25.5 million earlier this year. Heretic performed at the high end of our forecast panel’s forecast, with much of that business driven by good word of mouth with a 93% RT review plus 78% viewer rating, similar to PostTrak’s 70% positive rating. With that in mind, the CinemaScore was a “C+,” which is somewhat expected for a horror film with a controversial subject matter, but still represents a large discrepancy from reviews. This is the same score as A24 Midsummer got $46.7 million from WW in 2019 before deposit. Apparently, some of the audience didn’t get the film that was sold to them, which is what A24 faced Civil War also… although this one deserves a “B-”.

Other notable achievements

Reuniting director George Nolfi with his The banker Star Anthony Mackie, Vertical’s elevation earned $1.185 million from 1,416 locations. With only 54% RT critical this is very critical A quiet place-esque sci-fi survival horror film felt like DTV or streaming from the start.

Crunchyroll’s release (via Sony) of the anime film Overlord: The Holy Kingdom (subtitled The Holy Kingdom in Japan) took in $1.165 million from 621 locations and achieved its best business of $555,000 on Friday. Unlike some theatrical releases in this animation subgenre, this was not a compilation film.

Warner Bros. took over foreign distribution for the Amazon/MGM holiday blockbuster RedThe film grossed an estimated $26.6 million from 25,195 theaters in 75 international markets, including Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and China. That’s on par with The Rock’s 2021 vehicle’s $26 million launch Jungle cruise. The three-day total for IMAX is $1.4 million, while the top three territories are the U.K. ($3.2 million), Mexico ($2.3 million) and China ($2 million US dollars). The film will hit around 4,000 North American screens next weekend and is sure to take the top spot given the star performances of Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans combined with the holiday spirit. It will be an interesting test to see how much mileage the PG-13 gets Red can escape the Santa Claus vibe as several recent titles focused on Saint Nicholas have gone straight to streaming (Noelle, Candy Cane Alley, The Christmas Chronicles 1 and 2). Not taking into account R-rated entries like Violent night or FatmanThe most comparable contemporary live-action Santa Claus film ever to hit theaters was the PG-rated, $100 million budget disaster Fred Claus starring Vince Vaughn, which opened in 2007 with $72 million domestically and $97.8 million overseas. Current RT score for Red is 35% lazy, which doesn’t bode well for long-term performance given the triad of Evil, Gladiator IIAnd Moana 2 will eat up Thanksgiving ticket sales.
