Police shoot, kill man after carjacking, police chase – NBC10 Philadelphia

A man is dead after a confrontation with police ended in gunfire Sunday night in West Philadelphia.

According to Deputy Commissioner Vanore, just before 5 p.m., officers were called to a domestic situation involving an argument between a woman and her boyfriend who had allegedly fired a shot inside a home.

After this disturbance, the woman called the police.

Vanore said in a news conference Sunday evening that the 47-year-old man left the house and a police officer saw him walking toward a pickup truck and ordered the driver to get out. The officer confronted the man and a shot was fired.

An officer fired his weapon on Chancellor Street, but officers said they were unsure how many shots were fired.

The suspect managed to get into the truck and flee the area, leading to a police pursuit that ended on Woodland Avenue.

The suspect was then seen exiting the truck and was armed. Officers attempted to arrest the man, and that’s when shots were fired again, police said.

The suspect was struck by gunfire, arrested and taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to police.

Police are not sure where the suspect fired the shots.

NBC10 spoke with the victim who was assaulted in this incident.

“I can tell he was mentally ill. There was something wrong with him because I offered him money to start,” car theft victim Tony said of the suspect. “I could just tell he wasn’t paying attention to me. And I just took a risk. And I just jumped out of the truck and started running.”

Tony said this happened while he was driving his work truck to pick up a friend when the suspect forced himself into the passenger seat of his truck.

He was soon able to get out and run away, but the suspect tried to shoot him.

“When the gun jammed, he ran closer to me,” Tony said. “I put my hands in the air and told him, ‘What are you doing? Just calm down, calm down.’ He just wouldn’t calm down.”

Police are looking for video footage and the recovered firearm needs to be examined along with other evidence.

At this time, officials said no one else was injured in this incident.
