Trump says former ICE chief Tom Homan will serve as his “border czar.”

Topline

President-elect Donald Trump announced Sunday that he will appoint former acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) chief Tom Homan as his “border czar,” bringing back a key figure who oversaw his first administration’s controversial family separation policy .

Important facts

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump called Homan “a champion of border control” and said he would “join the Trump Administration in charge of our nation’s borders (“The Border Czar”).”

In his role as “border czar,” Homan will oversee “the southern border, the northern border, all maritime and air security,” the president-elect said.

Trump praised Homan, saying there was “no one better at policing and controlling the borders” and adding that he was “responsible for all deportations of illegal aliens back to their country of origin.”

Unlike Cabinet appointments, Trump’s choice for “border czar” does not have to go through a Senate confirmation process.

Homan also contributed to Project 2025 — the controversial far-right blueprint for the next conservative White House administration that the Trump administration sought to distance itself from.

Crucial quote

In an interview with Fox News earlier Sunday, Homan defended Trump’s plans for mass deportation, saying, “It will be a targeted, planned operation led by the men and women of ICE… If we go out there, we will do it.” We know who we are looking for and most likely where they will be, and this will be done in a humane manner.” Homan also dismissed suggestions that the military would be used to do this, claiming: “ICE has the highest detention standards in the industry, these people are well taken care of.”

Important background

Homan is considered one of the main architects of the first Trump administration’s controversial “zero tolerance” family separation policy. According to a 2022 report in the Atlantic, Homan was one of the first government officials to put forward the idea of prosecuting and separating undocumented migrants who cross the border illegally with their children. The plan was initially rejected as “heartless and impractical” but was later adopted during Trump’s first term, resulting in the separation of at least 5,000 families. At the National Conservatism conference in July, Homan said that if Trump were to return to office, “I will be on his heels when he returns, leading the largest deportation force this country has ever seen… They haven’t seen anything yet.” Wait You by 2025.”

What you should pay attention to

Last month, in an interview with CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” I was asked about reinstating family separations and said, “I don’t know of any formal policy that talks about family separations,” but added that it was “absolutely necessary.” When asked about carrying out mass deportations without separating families, the former acting ICE chief said: “Of course there are…families can be deported together.”
