Here’s what’s open (and closed) on Veterans Day 2024

Most holidays have some flexibility in when they are celebrated, making them easier to fit into a three-day weekend. Veterans Day is not one of those holidays, although by a lucky calendar coincidence it falls on Monday this year and could extend some people’s weekends.

Along with New Year’s Day, Christmas and Independence Day, Veterans Day is limited to one specific day: November 11th. It’s a federal and bank holiday that always raises questions about what’s open and what’s closed.

Here’s the good news: Retail stores generally keep their doors open (although some small businesses prefer to honor those who served and take the day off). However, if your to-do list today includes visiting a government agency or bank, things can get much more complicated.

Here’s a look at who’s open and closed on Veterans Day 2024.

What is Veterans Day?

The holiday is intended to honor those who have died in service to the country and to thank those who served. Originally known as Armistice Day, it was proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 and made a federal holiday in 1938.

There’s a reason we don’t deviate from the date of November 11th. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, an armistice (or armistice) between the Allied nations and Germany came into effect, signaling the unofficial end of the First World War.

Are banks open on Veterans Day?

They are not. Veterans Day is a federal holiday, which means most banks will remain closed. Of course, you can still make online transfers and use ATMs to withdraw cash or deposit money into your account.

Will there be mail delivery on Veterans Day?

The U.S. Postal Service is off on the day, but UPS and FedEx will continue business as usual, including deliveries for all departments. In addition, regular opening hours apply at all drop-off points.

Is the stock market open on Veterans Day?

The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and other exchanges remain open. Your next scheduled holiday is Thanksgiving. However, the bond markets remain closed.

Are government offices open on Veterans Day?

Federal offices remain closed. Likewise, most (but probably not all) city, county, and state districts also have a day off.

Which retail and grocery stores are closed on Veterans Day?

Pretty much everyone. While some small stores may close out of respect or due to staffing issues, major retailers will remain open as usual.
