Center Democrats turn to the far left after the election: “Identity politics” is “absolutely killing us”

Centrist Democrats condemned their far-left counterparts after Election Day, arguing that their emphasis on “identity politics” and other issues had brought major victories for the Republican Party.

Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., argued that President-elect Trump has “no greater friend than the far left.” Like-minded Democrats say racial politics, anti-police rhetoric and gender hysteria are alienating millions of voters.

“There is more to lose than gain politically by joining a far left that represents Twitter, Twitch and TikTok better than the real world,” Torres wrote on the extreme left sells.”

Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville put it more bluntly in a Sunday interview with The New York Times, calling “defund the police” the “three dumbest words in the English language.”

“We could never get rid of the smell,” he said.

Torres is one of several Democratic lawmakers in both the House and Senate who denounced his party’s “nonsense.” A centrist Democrat in the House of Representatives complained to Axios on Monday that “the identity politics stuff is absolutely killing us.”

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., argued Sunday that Democrats have “lost touch with the meaning/purpose crisis that drives MAGA.”

“We don’t listen enough; we tell people what is good for them. And when progressives like Bernie take aggressive action against the elites who oppress the people, they are shunned as dangerous populists. Why? “Perhaps because real economic populism is bad for our future-income base,” Murphy wrote.

However, not all Democrats are willing to make changes. When Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., broke with his party last week to condemn biological men in women’s sports, he faced an avalanche of hate.

“Democrats spend far too much time trying not to offend anyone rather than being brutally honest about the challenges facing many Americans,” Moulton said in a New York Times report. “I have two little girls, I don’t want them to be run over on the field by a male or former male athlete, but as a Democrat I should be afraid to say that.”

The statement led to calls for Moulton to resign and at least one of his employees quit in protest.

Massachusetts state Rep. Manny Cruz suggested in a post on X that Moulton’s stance was “a betrayal.”

“Congressman Moulton, your commitment then was to protect the LGBTQ community, advocate for their rights and compassion. Now, on a political whim, our congressman has betrayed the words he signed just last year by scapegoating the failures of transgender youth in sports.” You said you would “stand with Nagly and on “Stand with our entire community … against all forms of bigotry, discrimination, bullying and harassment,” Cruz wrote.

Salem City Councilman Kyle Davis, another Democrat, called for Moulton to resign.

“I don’t expect an apology from you [Moulton]“I’m looking for a resignation,” Davis wrote in a post on X.

Moulton refused to apologize and instead doubled down on his statement in a statement late last week.

“As always, I will fight for the rights and safety of all citizens. These two ideas are not mutually exclusive, and we may even disagree about them. Still, there are many who scream from the far-left corners of social media.” “I think I failed the Democratic Party’s unspoken purity test,” he said.

“We didn’t lose the 2024 election because of any transgender person or issue. We lost in part because we shame and denigrate too many opinions from too many voters, and that has to stop. Let’s have these debates now and set a new strategy for our party since our existing one failed, and then act together against the Trump agenda wherever it threatens American values.”
