Papa John’s, Dutch Bros, Red Robin

Papa John’s sales took a hit in the last quarter. The pizza chain’s same-store sales fell 6% in the third quarter. Pizza chains’ sales have been weak over the past two years as customers switched to other options, but Papa John’s sales have lagged those of competitors.

Dutch Bros. doesn’t seem to suffer from traffic jams. The drive-thru beverage chain said its same-store sales rose 2.7%, more than expected, and as a result raised its expectations for the year.

Red Robin is turning to discounts after resisting them for two years. The burger chain is now offering weekday deals, such as half-price kids’ meals on Wednesdays and $10 burgers Monday through Wednesday.

The First Watch chain wants to find out how effective one-to-one marketing can be. Management told Wall Street analysts yesterday that it would tap into its treasure trove of customer data to deliver highly customized messages at exactly the right time.
