Jack Del Rio will resign from his job in Wisconsin following the OWI arrest

Former NFL coach Jack Del Rio will resign from his position as a senior adviser to Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell following an arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to ESPN.com’s Adam Rittenberg.

According to the report, Del Rio, 61, was arrested Friday after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a street sign, broke through a fence and ended up in a yard. The incident occurred in Madison, Wisconsin.

Del Rio was leaving the area when officers arrived. He reportedly showed “signs of impairment” and admitted to driving the vehicle. He was arrested for operating while intoxicated.

“He’s going to move on and resign and move on,” Fickell said of Rittenberg on Monday. “But it is a difficult situation. Decisions for which we must all be able to take full responsibility. So that’s what Jack is going to do and we’re going to keep moving forward.”

Del Rio served as head coach of the Jaguars and Raiders. Most recently, he served as the commanders’ defense coordinator.

In 2022, commanders fined Del Rio $100,000 for comments describing the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 as “gather dust.”

Del Rio was a third-round pick by the Saints in 1985 and played for New Orleans, Kansas City, Dallas and Minnesota. His coaching career began in 1997.
