Sting doesn’t allow Sean “Diddy” Combs‘ Legal battles influence his opinion of The Police’s song “Every Breath You Take.”

The 73-year-old musician (real name Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner) told the Los Angeles Times In an interview published on Monday, November 11, he explained that the recent allegations against the disgraced music mogul had no impact on what he thought of the song. Diddy, 55, sampled the song in his 1997 track “I’ll Be Missing You,” which was also included Believe Evans and R&B group 112.

“NO. I mean, I don’t know what happened [with Diddy]”,” Sting told the outlet. “But for me it doesn’t detract from the song at all. It’s still my song.”

The 17-time Grammy winner’s comments come amid a series of allegations against Diddy, who was arrested in September and charged with sex trafficking and racketeering. Since then, he has been behind bars at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and has been denied bail several times.

Diddy’s most recent legal troubles began in November 2023, when ex Cassie accused him of sexual assault and rape in a $40 million lawsuit. He denied their claims and the case was settled out of court a day after it was filed.

Following the case, several people filed their own sexual assault claims against the rapper, which eventually led to Homeland Security raids on Diddy’s homes in Miami and Los Angeles in connection with a sex trafficking investigation.

Diddy’s 14-page indictment was unsealed a day after his arrest on September 16 in New York City. The court documents accuse Diddy of hosting parties called “Freak Offs,” which he allegedly recorded. As a control tactic, he is also said to have “distributed various controlled substances to the victims.”

Diddy and his lawyers have vehemently denied the multiple allegations against him. The rapper pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.

“He is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal,” his lawyer said. Marc Agnifilo told Us weekly in a statement at the time. “Mr. Combs has been extremely cooperative in this investigation and voluntarily moved to New York last week in anticipation of these charges. Please reserve judgment until you have all the facts. These are the actions of an innocent man with nothing to hide, and he looks forward to clearing his name in court.”

However, since his arrest, Diddy has faced more and more allegations during his time in prison.
