Rubio’s expected appointment was first reported in The New York Times on Monday.

The 53-year-old Republican from Florida has long warned about the threat to the country from its foreign adversaries, including China and Iran.

Rubio – the son of Cuban exiles – has represented Florida in the US Senate since 2011. He is vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

This is a groundbreaking story. Please check back for updates.
