Kevin Costner reacts to John Dutton’s controversial Yellowstone fate

And it appears the 69-year-old told the series creator he had suggested “two possible endings” for John Dutton Taylor Sheridan at the beginning of the series – is not eager to see his character’s death on screen.

“I heard it was a suicide,” he continued, “so I don’t want to rush to see it.”

In reality, John Dutton’s death was initially ruled a suicide at the beginning of the fifth season episode, but by the end of the episode, the audience learned that Sarah Atwood (played by Dawn Olivieri), the girlfriend of John’s estranged son Jamie (Wes Bentley), hired someone to kill him.

While fans protested online against the way his character was written off, Costner – who was at a screening Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter Twothe two-part film project that Costner focused on after his exit Yellowstone, when the controversial episode aired – has faith in Taylor and his team.

“They’re pretty smart people,” he added. “Maybe it’s a diversionary tactic. Who knows? They are very good. And they will find out.”
