Human remains found in freezer of Michigan townhouse: ‘Smell of death’

Authorities in Michigan are investigating after human remains were discovered in a freezer at a townhouse last week.

Shortly after noon on Thursday, November 7th, the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) was called to a residence for a suspicious situation.

Police said the 911 caller indicated there was blood on the floor in the apartment.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered there was dried blood on the floor, but no signs of forced entry.

After a thorough search of the apartment, officers found a body in a freezer. In addition to the first victim, police found possible human remains of a second person of unknown gender in the same freezer.

As WLNS reported, stickers with biohazard warnings were hanging on the front door of the house on Friday.

A resident who lives near the townhouse told WLNS that he had not seen anyone entering or leaving the townhouse in months.

“We were thinking last night about how many days we might have slept in bed just feet from a dead body,” Andrew Whitney told the outlet. “Something violent and serious appears to have happened.”

Michigan State Police are currently reviewing evidence.

There were no arrests. The police assume that there is no danger to the public.

Whitney added that investigators were at the townhouse all night Thursday into Friday and that the smell was overwhelming.

“I didn’t smell death, but if I had to guess, it would be the smell of death,” Whitney said.

East Lansing Interim Police Chief Chad Pride told WLNS that the delay between the discovery of the remains and the crime will complicate the investigation, but he is confident investigators will get to the bottom of the matter.

“I hope we can find something quickly so that the public, the family and the neighbors can feel comfortable,” Pride said.

A spokesperson for the company that manages the townhouse told WLNS that management is cooperating fully with the investigation, but could not comment on the situation as it is an ongoing investigation.

Fox News Digital reached out to East Lansing police and Coolidge Place management for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
