You only have until January to complete Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Pokedex

How close are you to completing the Pokedex in Pokemon TCG Pocket? I’m still a long way from that even though I own over 1,100 cards. It’s basics like Kakuna and Nidoking that I’m still missing and waiting for trading to implement because I’m reluctant to spend my pack points on anything other than the alternate arts Gengar and Zapdos.

There are a lot of cards to collect in Pokemon TCG Pocket, as evidenced by the fact that I Despite it I haven’t drawn two Gardevoir for the Mewtwo Ex deck yet. But instead of chasing the meta, I’m chasing one card in particular: Mew.

Mew and Mewtwo have taken on corresponding roles in Pocket. Mewtwo is reviled thanks to its terrible meta Ex card that grips the PvP scene like a vice. Mew, on the other hand, is a mechanically useless card with beautiful art that you get as a reward for completing the Kanto Pokedex. It’s perfect, it will never feel oppressive, and it fits Mew’s magical qualities.

I’m sure I’ll get there eventually, but for now I’m on a timer. I need to finish the Pokemon TCG Pocket Pokedex before the next set comes out, because after that I’ll be chasing another exciting card and leaving the Genetic Apex expansion behind.

When will the next pocket expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game be released?

The Pikachu EX card appears in Pokemon Pocket.

Leaks suggest the next Pokemon TCG Pocket expansion will release in January 2025. Well-known and generally reliable leaker Centro Leaks suggests that there will be a mini-release in mid-December, but the next big drop the size of Genetic Apex will occur on January 30th.

Genetic Apex will probably still be available after this, but we’ll be too busy with the shiny new extras to give it a second thought.

The leaker notes that he has datamined this information and is subject to change, but it seems unlikely that the date will shift much. A three-month release cycle is standard for live service games, and we’re ready for a change of scenery as we open packs by the end of January. To be honest, I’m ready now because the lack of new content is boring after the initial grind, but I appreciate the time to complete my Pokedex and search the alternate arts for Zapdos Ex and Gengar Ex.

What’s the next pocket expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game?

The Pokemon TCG pocket card Erika by Saino Misaki.

We currently have no idea what the next TCG Pocket expansion will contain, and the leaker provided few clues. Although we’re apparently planning a Magnemite and Bulbasaur event in December, we don’t even have a name for the next expansion yet.

However, could you have guessed that “Genetic Apex” would be about Pikachu, Charizard and Mewtwo? I could see the latter, but the others have no meaning to the extension name.

What do I personally want? Thanks for asking. I need some Gen 2 love. I can’t get it from Pokemon Go so I need TCG Pocket to do it for me. A Raikou Ex card would fit perfectly into many of my decks thanks to my love of lightning-types, and I would open an inordinate number of packs to get alternative illustrations of the legendary beasts.

The transition across generations could be a good way forward. Although there are many others included in Genetic Apex, it is primarily a Kanto expansion – hence the Mew reward for completing the first Pokedex. Moving on to second generation next, third generation in April, fourth generation in July, etc. would be a fun rhythm, and older fans like myself would appreciate the schedule.

In the meantime, focus on Genetic Apex. This is the only time in this game that you only have one expansion to open packages. This is the best chance to complete a Pokedex. It will be hard, a long job of crushing currencies and crossing your fingers as you hit wonder picks, but your time is now. Get the Mew. I believe in you.
