Cheshire teacher placed on leave for posting a politically charged Snapchat video

CHESHIRE, CT (WFSB) – A Cheshire teacher has been placed on leave for posting a politically charged video she recorded on social media.

Cheshire Public School Superintendent Dr. Jeff Solan, said he became aware of the Snapchat video over the weekend in which a woman made threats against supporters of President-elect Donald Trump.

Solan said the teacher intended the video as a private message to her group on Snapchat and that she was expressing her personal opinion, not that of Cheshire Public Schools.

“Cheshire Public Schools is reviewing this situation as a personnel matter and as such we are following all applicable laws,” he said.

The unidentified teacher has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Solan said it was clear the school could not continue as usual with her there.

“I think her reaction was inappropriate,” said Ian Anctil, a parent. “I think she should definitely be suspended as a teacher while the investigation is ongoing.”

Parents in the community told Channel 3 they were disheartened after hearing such a message from an educator.

“So it doesn’t matter whether you agree politically or not,” Anctil said. “They are teachers and educators and educate our children. You need to be aware of who will hear your testimony, whether it is not intended for the public or not.”

The school district received a large number of calls, mostly from people outside of Cheshire Township, Solan said.

Although there were no direct threats, there was a police presence on site as a precautionary measure.
